Jasprit Bumrah’s story through the Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons is the stuff of dreams. As a young lad with an awkward action that seems more injury-seeking than record-chasing, it did not seem to many people that Bumrah would play well for so many years.

In line with his record, Bumrah’s price in the IPL has moved upwards over the years. In 2013, when MI grabbed him for Rs 1.2 crore, there were only a few bids for him. Between 2013 and 2017, when Bumrah was honing his bowling skills, his price remained Rs 1.2 crores per year. That said, the Mumbai franchise saw his potential, which is why they got him in their lineup year after year.
In terms of performance, IPL 2016 was the breakthrough season for Bumrah, as he took 15 wickets. He followed that up by taking 20 wickets in IPL 2017, wherein he also delivered several match-winning performances.
Therefore, it came as no surprise when MI paid an impressive Rs 7 crores for Bumrah in 2018 because by then, he had emerged as the leader of their bowling attack. Moreover, Malinga, who used to be the star bowler for MI, had started to show signs of slowing down.
